A varistor is a type of resistor with a significantly non-ohmic current-voltage characteristic. Which have symmetrial voltage-current characteristics and unparalleled large peak current capability are used for absorption of  transient voltage, suppression of pulse noise and circuit voltage stabilization.

The most common type of varistor is the Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV). This contains a ceramic mass of zinc oxide grains, in a matrix of other metal oxides (such as small amounts of bismuth, cobalt, manganese) sandwiched between two metal plates (the electrodes). The boundary between each grain and its neighbour forms a diode junction, which allows current to flow in only one direction. The mass of randomly oriented grains is electrically equivalent to a network of back-to-back diode pairs, each pair in parallel with many other pairs.

Also referred to as a condenser, a capacitor is a passive electrical component widely used to store electricity as an electrical charge. 
There are many types of capacitors available on the market. You can find very small ones available as capacitor beads utilized in resonance circuits. 
Large power factor correction capacitors are also available from very small to huge capacitors and everything in between, you would find a wide range of capacitors. However, they all serve one function and that is to store electrical charge.
 
The simplest type of capacitor available consists of 2 parallel conductive plates. These plates are separated via dielectric, an insulating material. 
This insulating layer interrupts the flow of DC current via the capacitor. Instead of DC current, a voltage across the plates is present in the form of an electrical charge.
Conductive plates are available in various shapes such as circular, cylindrical and rectangular. The insulating layer is either in the form of waxed paper, Air, Plastic or even in certain type of liquid gel. 
 
Electrical charge can be of two types namely positive and negative. Positive charge is present in the form of protons and negative charge in the form of electrons. The positive charge collects on a plate as soon as a voltage is placed across a capacitor. This is followed by a corresponding negative charge accumulation on the other plate. For each particle of positive charge a mining at one plate, a charge from similar will depart from- ve plate. The plates charge neutral. This is a potential different obtained from charge existing between two plates. The amount of charge that was deposited on the plates and the amount of capacitance the capacitor posses.
Capacitance is defined as the electrical property of a capacitor. It is the measure of the ability of capacitors for storing an electrical charge on two plates. In case, a voltage of (V) volts is connected across 2 plates capacitors, a positive electrical charge (2) will be present on one plate in coulombs and a negative charge on the other.This indicates that the capacitor will possess a capacitance valve equivalent to the amount of charge divided by voltage running across. This will proved the capacitance equation of (C=QV).

A good capacitor will have high dielectric resistance as well as zero plate resistance. This results in the charge flowing across the plates remaining constant for an indefinite period of time as soon as the source voltage was removed.

To read a potentiometer, you need a multimeter. Put in on the proper ohmmeter setting, which should be higher than that of the resistance rating of the potentiometer as noted on the package or the device. If you don't know the resistance rating, use the lowest setting of the multimeter and increase it until you get a reading.
When reading the potentiometer, one multimeter lead must always be on the wiper or middle part, and the other one can be on either of the remaining terminals. For example, place one multimeter lead on the wiper, and the other on the left terminal of the potentiometer. If you place one lead on the left terminal and the other on the right, you will read the entire value of the pot, and the resistance will not vary when you turn the knob.
Note that Inexpensive ones may approximate only fifty percent of their rated value when they are measured.

Trimming Potentiometers come in different types.
Rotary and trimming potentiometers are wire wound, and are single or multi-turn, depending on the number of times the knob may be turned. The resistance is lowered or increased by turning the knob clock or counterclockwise, where the knob direction is dependent on the end that is used with the wiper.Faders or sliders as they are also known, have a rectangular shape, and the wiper moves back and forth in a linear fashion.
 
Potentiometers work by having a resistive element inside. Both end terminals are attached to it, and do not move. The wiper travels along the strip when the knob is turned. The closer the wiper is to the end terminal it is wired in conjunction with, the less the resistance, because the path of the current will be shorter. The further away it moves from the terminal, the greater the resistance will be.

The symbol for a potentiometer is the same one as a resistor, save for an arrow in the middle. In a circuit where they are used strictly as variable resistors or rheostats, only two terminals are wired to the other components. All three terminals are wired separately when they function as voltage dividers. Light dimmers in houses and volume controls on electronics are two common applications. Others include switches and position sensors.
