For all capacitor technologies that do not have the ability to recover after a partial breakdown, the current flow is continuous.

However metallized film capacitors have the property to recover after an instantaneous breakdown (partial breakdown) due to the fact that the metallized electrodes (capacitor plates) act as a fuse. For fusing a small current is needed, but is not continuous. This effect is defined as “self healing” and not as breakdown.

Therefore in testing these capacitors on a proof voltage, it is always possible that the capacitors have the self healing effect, taking temporarily a peak current, but are completely isolated again after this phenomenon is stopped. To take this in account for qualifying capacitors, in all IEC standards of metallized film capacitors a breakdown is defined only when it is “permanent”.

Therefore a note is added for explanation.

Requirement: There shall be no permanent breakdown or flashover during the test.

Note: The occurrence of self-healing breakdowns during the application of the test voltages is allowed.

To detect if the behavior is a self healing or permanent breakdown, it is recommended to measure the remaining charging current only after one minute of charging and to neglect the small current peaks (arcing) before that time. Modern “high pot” test equipments have the function to allow arcing currents before the final permanent breakdown current.

(1) Please make sure the environmental and mounting conditions to which capacitor will be exposed are within the conditions specified in Nichicon's catalog (or alternate Nichicon specifications, such as series drawing).
(2) Category Temperature and Humidity
1. In case that the category temperature is specified differently from store temperature, please follow the specific drawing.
2. Do not expose film capacitors to rapid temperature variations. Even if the range of change is within the specified limits.
3.Do not use film capacitors in such high humidity conditions that result in the capacitor being exposed to water (including condensation).
(3) When you choosing film capacitors for your circuit. Be sure the capacitor match the requirement of the application. If film capacitors are chosen in incorrectly, deterioration of the characteristics will be accelerated. Therefore, please chose the capacitor carefully.
(4) Unless otherwise specified, do not use film capacitors in the circuits requiring rapid and very frequent charge/discharge. Doing so may result in degrading or destruction of the capacitor.

The polypropylene is sometimes used when a higher tolerance is necessary than polyester capacitors offer. As the name implies, this capacitor uses a polypropylene film for the dielectric. One of the advantages of the capacitor is that there is very little change of capacitance with time and voltage applied. They are also used for low frequencies, with 100 kHz or so being the upper limit. They are generally only available as leaded electronics components.

Su Suntan Polystyrene Film Capacitors

In these devices, polystyrene film is used as the dielectric. This type of capacitor is not for use in high frequency circuits, because they are constructed like a coil inside. They are used well in filter circuits or timing circuits which run at several hundred KHz or less.

The component shown on the left has a red color due to the copper leaf used for the electrode. The silver color is due to the use of aluminum foil as the electrode.

  • The device on the left has a height of 10 mm, is 5 mm thick, and is rated 100pF.
  • The device in the middle has a height of 10 mm, 5.7 mm thickness, and is rated 1000pF.
  • The device on the right has a height of 24 mm, is 10 mm thick, and is rated 10000pF.
  • These devices have no polarity.
