There are several stages to the manufacture of quartz crystals. Essentially the manufacture of the quartz crystal starts with the production of the raw crystals. 
These complete crystals pass though stages to produce the basic blanks, which are further processed to create the crystals that operate on the right frequency. 
Finally they are encapsulated and then tested to ensure that they work as required.
 
The basic manufacturing process starts with the introduction of the raw silicon, and then progresses from that point in a logical fashion.
Below is the main manufacturing process: 
 
*Growing the crystal
*Crystal cutting and lapping
*Final dimensioning and etching
*Electrodes
*Final adjustment and sealing

To analyse the electrical response of a quartz crystal resonator, it is very often useful to depict it as the equivalent electrical components that would be needed to replace it. 
This equivalent circuit is can then be used to analyse its response and predict its performance as in the diagram below:
 
The equivalent circuit given below is often called the 4-parameter crystal model and it is sufficient for many calculations and to illustrate the operation of the crystal.
The 4 parameter theoretical equivalent circuit of a quartz crystal showing the series resistance, capacitance and inductance together with a parallel capacitance.

It is possible to equate these theoretical constituent components to real physical attributes of the crystal:
 
L: The inductance arises from the mass of the material.
C1: This capacitance arises from the compliance of the crystal.
R: This element arises from the losses in the system. The largest of these arises from the frictional losses of the mechanical vibration of the crystal.
Co: This capacitance in the theoretical quartz crystal equivalent circuit arises from the capacitance between the electrodes of the crystal element. This is often refered to as the shunt capacitance.
 
Apart from their use in oscillators, quartz crystals find uses in filters. Here they offer levels of performance that cannot be achieved by other forms of filter. 
Often several crystals may be used in one filter to provide the correct shape.

Quartz crystal technology offers very many advantages, but against this there are also some other points to be placed into the equation when considering their use:
 
Advantages:
Very high Q resonator: The Q of a quartz crystal is very high. This in turn reflects in terms of several advantages:
*Very stable signal when used in an oscillator.
*Low levels of phase noise when used in an oscillator.
*When used in a filter it is possible to achieve very high levels of selectivity.
Low cost: Basic crystals are available at very reasonable costs. Their use can often result in a cheaper clock or other source when used as the resonator.
 
Disadvantages:
Size: A crystal relies on mechanical vibrations for its resonant behaviour. As a result size cannot be reduced easily and they may be large when compared to other SMYT components. 
That said, new surface mount technology crystals are available in very small packages now.
Soldering: In view of their performance soldering needs to be undertaken with care observing maximum temperatures and soldering times.
Fixed frequency: Although this can be an advantage as well, a crystal has its own natural resonant frequencies. 
Once chosen and manufactured these cannot be altered, although it is possible to 'pull' the frequency of an oscillator by a small amount.
